To help children learn life skills, it is imperative to teach them to write their problems away. Not only will that help them start to think and express independently but it will help them learn the best ways to facilitate problem solving capabilities. If you see that your child is having issues with school work, friends or just anything that is disturbing the child, it is best to help them deal with it. One of the best ways to teach your child problem solving is by having a positive attitude at home and emphasizing that there is something positive in each attempt to resolve the issue.
Additionally, you can also teach the child to write away the problems. Let them select a diary or keep a journal where they can freely express their problems, issues at hand, discuss their feeling as it vents out the anger in a constructive manner. However, even though as a parent, you maybe tempted to read it, refrain from it and respect the individuality and allow the space for the child to develop.
There are other ways of helping the child to constructively learn problem solving. Talk about approaches they can take to resolve an issue with a teacher, classmate or friend. Discuss hypothetical situations, friend’s situations and ask them what they would have done in their place. It is best to have a warm and caring environment at home that promotes problem solving as a good experience. Encourage brainstorming so that the child comes up with their own solutions and motivate them to find more than one solution to the problem so that they have an option. You can help them write a ‘mind map’ which lists the potential solutions to the problems and ask them to select the one that seems most suitable.
