What is a writing mentor and do I need one?

The simple and honest answer is yes, you do need a writing mentor. A writing mentor acts as a counselor and gives a one-on-one feedback to his charge on writing. It's an excellent scenario to learn and grow as a writer. But to be sure that you are ready for a writing mentor, here are some questions that will answer your question for you:

·        Do you already know everything?
·        Are you open to learning?
·        What kind of teaching approach do you like best?
·        Are your goals set?
·        Can a mentor help you achieve your goals?
·        How fast do you want to achieve your goals?
·        Do you need a mentor just because you are lonely?
·        Are you in search of a mentor to help you reduce your workload?

What kind of mentor do you need?

There are two kinds of mentors. One that goes for the kill and another who gives you space if you should fail. If you need someone to drive you, to be at the wheel so as to get the most out of you, a strict drill master is your best bet.

On the other hand, if you want to be given the freedom and just need guidance, you can opt for the second option. This mentor will provide information, answer questions, and help you know how you can use what what you have gathered. He, however, will not put a dagger to your throat to make you learn. He will give you the space and consider you an adult who is capable of making wise decisions.

Know yourself

Know what you are good at, your strengths, your drive, and your passion. This will help you in getting the best out of a mentorship program and also in selecting the right mentor.

Who should be your mentor?

A great mentor is the one who has the following qualities:

·        He can own up to his mistakes.
·        He accepts that he is not perfect but you get to learn from his mistakes.
·        He is knowledgeable and can help you with what you want to know.
·        He is patient and never gets irritated on being asked questions.

The qualities you must have to be an ideal candidate for mentoring are:
·        You must be humble.
·        Know your direction. Know where you want to go.
·        Be ethical: Respect and follow the advice that you ask for.
·        Be realistic: A mentor is not God. He is here to help you and is not here as a perfect representation of what you desire.

To sum up the answer to your question: What is a writing mentor and do  I need one? Yes, a writng mentor is needed if you are willing to ask and learn. And a writing mentor is the one who will motivate us and guide us in our writing journey.
