Most teenagers’ behavior is a mystery to the parents and why they act or behave in certain ways can be mind boggling. But the biggest problem that most parents face is unmotivated teenagers. Most people try to either bribe them or set punishments as motivating factors which really does not go well with the teens and miss the basic concept of motivation. Realigning their value system is more important and if your teenager is also a trial and do not seem to be motivated enough, here are a few tips:
- Communicate with them and look at the behavior pattern. Try to know how they feel about things and as a parent, take interest in their activities. You will be able to discover their value system and it is good to look at things from their perspective. That will get you higher insight into the way they think.
- Know more about how their actions translate into working towards their goal.
- Understand and evaluate their interests.
- Sit and talk to them about the current interests, their goals and advice them as per their value system. Scolding or punishments do not work at this age.
- Be open and talk straight. Discuss ways and methods to get both of you on the same page and show them ways of doing things well.
- Accept the teenagers the way they are. Till they are out of serious mischief and working towards their goals in their own value system, it is okay. Not everyone has to adhere to their parents’ way of doing things. It is important to realize their individuality and lay importance that what is important to you may not always be held in high esteem by them.
Every teenager wants to be successful and you do not have to change their value system to motivate them.
